Shahu Modak was an Indian actor, singer and music composer, who was primarily active in Marathi cinema during the 1930s to 1950s. He was born on 15th August 1918 in a small village called Gargoti in Maharashtra, India.
Modak started his acting career with the film "Ramshastri" in 1944, where he played the lead role of Ramshastri, a famous Marathi jurist. The film was a commercial success and established Modak as a versatile actor.
Over the years, Shahu Modak acted in more than 100 films and also composed music for many of them. Some of his notable films include "Sant Tukaram" (1936), "Swayamwar" (1949), "Sansar" (1952), "Vande Mataram" (1953), and "Shyamchi Aai" (1953). He won critical acclaim for his performances in "Amar Bhoopali" (1951), "Matwala Shair" (1959) and "Ek Gaon Ki Kahani" (1957).
Modak was also a trained classical singer and lent his voice to many Marathi film songs. Some of his popular songs include "Ghanashyam Sundara" from "Sant Tukaram" and "Ya Kundendu Tushar" from "Vande Mataram".
Shahu Modak was not only an actor and singer but also a philanthropist. He donated a significant amount of his earnings to charity and social causes. He died on 28th September 1993 in Mumbai, India, at the age of 75, leaving behind a rich legacy in Marathi cinema.
