The 5th of November is known as "Marathi Rangabhoomi Din" .
Marathi theatre is theatre performed in the Marathi language, especially in Maharashtra, India, and other parts of the world where there is a Marathi diaspora. It began in the mid-nineteenth century and peaked in the 1950s and 1960s, with genres such as Sangeet Natak (musical play) and Tamasha (folk dance). When much theatre in other regions of India has struggled to cope with the onslaught of television and film, it continues to have a strong presence in Maharashtra with a loyal audience. Its repertoire includes comedic social plays, farces, historical plays, musicals, and experimental and serious drama from the 1970s onwards by Vijay Tendulkar, P. L. Deshpande, Mahesh Elkunchwar, and Satish Alekar, all of which have affected Indian theatre. 1st Bengali and Marathi theatre have been at the forefront of creativity and important dramaturgy in Indian theatre since independence.
