Ruby Myers : first superstar of Indian silent cinema

Ruby Myers (1907–10 October 1983), popularly known as Sulochana, was an Indian silent film actress of Jewish origin from the Baghdadi Jewish community in India.[Indian silent film actress of Jewish ancestry. Real name: Ruby Myers. Not to be confused with Sulochana Latkar. Awarded the Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 1973.]

She was working as a telephone operator when Mohan Bhavnani of Kohinoor Film Company approached her about working in films. She originally declined him because acting was viewed as a dubious profession for women at the time. Despite her lack of acting experience, Bhavnani persisted, and she eventually agreed. She rose to stardom at Kohinoor under Bhavnani's guidance before going on to the Imperial.

When she was teamed with Dinshaw Bilimoria in Imperial Studios films, she was one of the most paid actresses of her era. She founded Rubi Pics, a film production company, in the mid-1930s.At one point, she was apparently earning more than the Governor of Bombay. Typist Girl (1926), Balidaan (1927), and Wildcat of Bombay (1928) are among her best films (1927). She plays eight characters in Wildcat of Bombay, demonstrating her acting abilities. Madhuri (1928), Anarkali (1928), and Indira B.A. (1928) were among her superhit romantic pictures . All of these films were directed by R.S. Chaudhari.

Ruby Myers aka Sulochana, was the first superstar of Indian silent cinema.
