Jeevankala

Jeevankala, a perennial side heroine, was born in Pune on June 29, 1944, and schooled in Bombay. She studied dance under Baba Saheb Gokhale (Kathak) and Professor Gaekwad (Bharat Natyam) and was hired as an assistant dance teacher at Bharat Vidya Bhavan in Bombay where she taught Kathak. As for Manipuri she learnt it herself. Being an adept in Bharat Natyam and Kathak styles, it was easy for her to learn all about Manipuri.

K. Amarnath, a film producer, discovered her during a recital where she was playing. He was so impressed that he quickly got her started in films with a role in Kal Hamara Hai in 1959. Before the year was out she had appeared on the big screen in at least nine other films. During her five years in films she has danced in many films.

Jeevankala was frequently cast as the love companion of the film's comedy relief, and she was sometimes seen in vamp roles. She was virtually always given the opportunity to demonstrate her dancing abilities. She did most of her work in the Hindi cinema industry, though she also appeared in some Marathi films.
