व्ही. जी. दामले, व्ही. शांताराम, एस. फातेलाल यांनी सुरु केलेल्या 'प्रभात फिल्म कंपनी' चा १८वा चित्रपट.
'विष्णुपंत पागनीस' यांच्या अभिनयाने अजरामर झालेली ही कलाकृती महाराष्ट्रासह, बंगलोर, मद्रास, दिल्ली, तसेच इंग्लंड, चीन व पूर्व अशियेत प्रदर्शित झाली. मुंबई मधे ५७ आठवडे चालेल्या या चित्रपटाने विश्वविक्रम केला व १९४० साली ७.९१ लाख रुपयांचा नफा कमवून भारतीय चित्रपटसृष्टीला Blockbuster या शब्दाची ओळख करून दिली.
म्हैसूरच्या राजाने या चित्रपटाची विशेष प्रत मागवून घेतली होती व व्हेनिस (Italy) मधे या चित्रपटाची जगातील ३ सर्वोत्कृष्ट चित्रपटांमध्ये निवड झाली. सदर महोत्सवाला खुद्द हिटलरने हजेरी लावल्याचे, तसेच प्रभातच्या संचालकांकडे चित्रपटाच्या उत्कृष्टतेबाबत प्रशंसा केल्याचे सांगितले जाते.
आजही पागानिसांचा फोटो लोक घरात तुकारामांचाच म्हणून पूजतात व ७५ वर्षांनंतरही चित्रपटाच्या DVDs ला मागणी आहे.

 

The first historical Marathi movie is "Sant Tukaram," which was released in 1936. The film was directed by Vishnupant Govind Damle and Sheikh Fattelal and was produced by Prabhat Film Company. The movie is based on the life of Saint Tukaram, who was a prominent poet-saint in the 17th century and is regarded as one of the greatest poets in the Marathi language. The film is considered a landmark in Marathi cinema and helped establish the industry's reputation for producing socially relevant and meaningful cinema. It was also the first Indian film to win an award at the Venice Film Festival in 1937. The success of "Sant Tukaram" paved the way for more historical and mythological films in Marathi cinema.
